Entering USAF service in 1969, the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy was the worlds largest aircraft until the development of the An-124 and An-225. The C-5 remains the largest, and arguably the most valuable strategic airlift asset in the U.S. arsenal. Starting in 2008, the remaining C-5 fleet was upgraded including the replacement of the original TF-39 engines with GE CF6-80C2s, the same engine used on the 747-400.
