On December 15, 1959 USAF Major Joseph W. Rogers flew Convair F-106A Delta Dart, serial number 56-0467, on the straight 11 mile course at Edwards Air Force Base to a new FAI world speed record of 2,455.736 kmph (1,525.924 mph). This broke the record set two years earlier by Major Adrian Drew in a McDonnell F-101A Voodoo. Major Rogers was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Henry De La Vaulx Medal by the FAI, and the Thompson Trophy.
